Buses and Biofuels:
A Problem Based Learning Unit for Algebra
This unit uses an approach of student-based learning and real world application in an Algebra I classroom. Students research and create a report to present to the school board and community about the use of biofuel in the school transportation system. Many math standards are addressed, including the interpretation of graphs and calculation of rates. Additionally, this unit allows for interdisciplinary learning in the areas of biology, English, speech, and social studies (through social issues). Through this student-led learning approach, students help design their direction and ultimately their learning for the project and develop a truly meaningful understanding of the mathematical concepts and real world connections.
